When Sally and I were in the Dominican photographing a wedding for her company, we took a day and ventured into the nearest city… Higuey… a 45 minute bus ride inland! Just a few days prior, we met “Shorty” on the beach, a local vendor who offered to show us the city of Higuey (for a nominal fee, of course). We met “Shorty” (seen below in the black & white photo) out front of our hotel on Monday morning and headed to the nearest bus station. I felt a little daring hopping on the public transportation of an unknown country with a guy we just met a couple of days earlier… a guy, who promised, that the city was safe for us girls to be walking around in with cameras around our necks. Turns out he was right! Nobody even attempted to talk to us, except for a couple of local kids who later were treated to pop and lunch (one of them kept asking for money saying he was so hungry)… The city of Higuey was completely safe for two American girls with big ‘ole cameras around their necks. Heading into Higuey for a day was the highlight of my trip to the Dominican Republic! I was able to see what made the Dominican different than other tropical destinations, eat an authentic Dominican meal, and see the country outside of the resorts! Sometimes taking the road less traveled proves to be the best choice!
The last couple of pictures were from our last night in the Dominican. We stayed up all night because our shuttle to the airport was to leave extremely early the next morning. We grabbed the tripod and headed down to the beach for a few midnight exposures. Oh yeah, and after we took the pictures, we decided that one last swim in the ocean was necessary at 3:30am… its a good thing no other sea creatures decided to swim with us because it was pitch black out and we would have never seen them coming!
